When it comes to dating, what does it mean to have “a type” and do people really have one pet lover dating type? Scientists say “yes,” but how we develop our “type”? You might be surprised about how we can use it to better our relationships.

Dating Types and Life Events

A study put the saying “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” to the test. Researchers chose 547 identical twin pairs and 214 same-sex, non-identical twin pairs, and rated the attractiveness of faces. While the researchers expected those with close genetic makeup to rate faces similarly, they were surprised to find a different result.

“In our case, we found that even though identical twins share all of their genes and their family environment, they were really, really different from each other in their facial aesthetic preferences,” study author Jeremy Wilmer told TIME.

What does this mean? Study author Laura Germine told TIME that she believes different facial preferences can be attributed to different life events.

“If you take a face and you pair it with positive information, that face then looks more attractive, and faces that are similar to it also look more attractive and vice versa,” she explains. “So, you can imagine as you go through life and you form relationships and have friends and people you have a more positive relationship with, you may come to find their face characteristics more attractive, and then other people who look similar to them are then more attractive to you.”

Basically, who you find attractive may be less about genetics and more about who you’ve had a positive interaction with.

Using your dating type to strengthen relationships

When it comes to personality and lifestyle, researchers again found solid evidence that people have a “dating type.” Unfortunately, the study also confirmed that we date those similar to our exes.

But lead researcher Yoobin Park told Huff Post that this pattern doesn’t have to be negative. Park suggests that if you find yourself in a string of toxic relationships, don’t blame your “type.” Instead, use your past lessons in communication and bonding within this type to strengthen your next relationship.
