Dating with pets can bring unexpected challenges, especially when the person you’re dating is afraid of your animal. What happens when you really like someone, but they want you to give up a pet you love?

Real dating questions. Honest answers.

These questions come from members of the FetchaDate community.

Dear Sheryl,

I’ve been dating a guy I really like, but there’s one problem: I have a pet snake, and he’s terrified of it! He says he can’t see himself dating someone who owns a snake and wants me to rehome it.

I care about him, but my snake is part of my life. Should I try to compromise, or is this a sign we’re just not compatible?

Dating With Pets: Can Love and Fear Coexist?

Well, this is certainly a dating dilemma with a slithering twist!

While I can understand why your boyfriend might not be thrilled about sharing space with a snake, I also understand why you’re not willing to give up a pet you love.

Let’s separate two things here: his fear and your responsibility to your pet.

His fear is real, and it deserves some understanding. Not everyone is comfortable around snakes, just as some people are afraid of dogs or cats. You can’t expect him to suddenly become a reptile enthusiast because he’s dating you.

But he can’t expect you to give up a pet simply because he’s uncomfortable with it, either.

When we bring an animal into our lives, we make a commitment to care for it. That commitment doesn’t disappear because someone new enters the picture. Responsible pet care means considering an animal’s needs even when our circumstances change.

How Can You Compromise When Dating With Pets?

Clear boundaries can help couples navigate different comfort levels around animals.

Before deciding this relationship is doomed, is there a compromise? If so, here’s what it might actually look like.

Does he need to interact with your snake? Absolutely not.

Could you keep its enclosure in a separate room? Sure.

Would he feel more comfortable learning about your pet, its care, and how safely it’s housed? Maybe.

Dating with pets doesn’t mean forcing someone to interact with an animal they’re afraid of. It means discussing boundaries that respect both partners and the pet.

And who knows? With time, he might even become a little less fearful. Although I wouldn’t count on him volunteering for snake-sitting duty anytime soon! 😂

When Different Comfort Levels Become Incompatibility

But here’s where I’d pay attention.

Is he asking you to respect his fear, or is he asking you to sacrifice something important to you to make him comfortable?

Those are two very different requests.

You don’t need a partner who loves snakes as much as you do. You need someone who respects that YOU do.

And he deserves to decide whether he can genuinely feel comfortable in a relationship where a snake is part of the household. Neither of you is wrong for having different comfort levels.

Honest conversations help reveal whether two people can build a life that works for both.

But if his position remains, “It’s me or the snake,” then you may have discovered an important incompatibility.

Because dating isn’t just about finding someone you’re attracted to. It’s about discovering whether your lives, values, and commitments can actually fit together.

🟢 Explore: He’s willing to understand your attachment to your pet and discuss arrangements that respect both your needs and his fears.

🟡 Observe: He’s uncomfortable and hesitant but open to discussing boundaries. Give him some time, without pressuring him to interact with your snake.

🔴 Don’t Explain It Away: He insists you rehome your pet, dismisses your attachment, or makes giving up your snake a condition of continuing the relationship.

Here’s what I’d ask you to consider: If you gave up your snake to keep this relationship, would you eventually resent him for it?

And if he stayed while feeling constantly fearful in your home, would that be fair to him?

Sometimes two perfectly good people simply aren’t compatible. And discovering that early is exactly what dating is supposed to help us do.

And Snake Mom, in a nutshell:

The right relationship shouldn’t require you to shed something you love just to make it work.
